And then on November 12th, we attended a meet and greet with our 14th presidential candidate, Governor Martin O'Malley. We happened to be singing at a retirement community that evening in the same town, so it was convenient enough for us to just drop by before heading home! We arrived kind of late—just as he finished his speech, and started greeting supporters. My sister and I made our way through the line and asked to have our pictures taken. The former governor of Maryland was very friendly. My sister told him that she had watched him in the last debate, and even though we are Republicans she thinks that he would be the best choice for all the Democrats. He completely agreed.
Under Governor O'Malley's leadership, his state ranked #1 for innovation and entrepreneurship for three years in a row. Today 86% of Marylanders pay less in state income taxes than before O'Malley took office. He also decriminalized owning small amounts of marijuana, and his state became the first to support “marriage equality.” O'Malley ended the death penalty in Maryland, and drove the violent crime rate down to 30 year lows. He made the state's gun laws some of the strictest in the whole nation. O'Malley promised that if elected he will take immediate action to fix the immigration problem. He plans to expand President Obama's actions on the matter, and make a pathway to citizenship available for all 11 million undocumented immigrants currently living in our country. O'Malley also believes that the U.S. should accept at least 65,000 Syrian refugees by the end of 2016. In addition to all this, he feels that the next president must build on the Affordable Care Act's success. O'Malley wishes to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour. He also supports federal abortion funding. Martin O'Malley says he is running to rebuild the American Dream. He is a life long Democrat, with (it seems to me) the most socialistic ideas of all the candidates.
Fun Fact: In 1998 O'Malley formed an American Celtic Music and Folk rock band, “O'Malley's March.” The former governor sings and plays the guitar!
