Summit Agricultural Group Meeting with Chris Christie

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie with the author
The 29th of September found my family and me pulling into the headquarters of Summit Agricultural Group located in Alden, Iowa! We were directed by the organized Republican team to exactly where we were supposed to park, and soon we found ourselves some seats. Shortly after 5:30, the 53 year old governor of New Jersey was welcomed to the room and he began his speech. The event was held in a spacious work shop like building, which contained a John Deere combine! Christie impressed upon us his honesty—he said that we have the right to know everything about whoever we elect as our president. It would be the only way we could be sure we could trust him.
Mr. Christie told about his record as governor. He helped pull his state through the disaster of Hurricane Sandy, and he said that if our country was to have a disaster in the future we would need someone like him to pull the country through. Governor Christie addressed the immigration problem also. He explained the impracticality of building a wall across the whole length of the Mexican border. He proposed instead, that we should only guard the places on the border which seem to pose a security risk. His speech was brief and he gave the audience a generous amount of time for a question and answer session.
Christie is for a strong military defense, and also for ensuring that America remains the home of innovation in the world.

Mr. Christie made his speech quite interesting by telling a lot of stories—something I always like. Afterward the governor and his wife, Mary Pat, made time to speak with everyone. They seemed like very nice people.

On September 27th we went to meet our first democrat on the list of candidates--Bernie Sanders! I made my way into the crowded college auditorium, and found a seat in the bleachers.   At the appointed time the 74 year old Vermont Senator came up to the stage and was greeted by all of his fellow socialists, with a thunderous roar of applause. Bernie Sanders must have had hundreds of fans there; it was almost shocking that so many people could support his positions. Most of them, not surprisingly, were young.
Sanders addressed the problems we have with the evil rich, and how we need to steal from them to give to the poor. He told about how in Germany they have free education, and we need to have that here in our country too. He said it was simply disgraceful that all of the other civilized lands have a long paid maternity leave, while our country doesn't require it. Afterward he gave the opportunity for a few of the incredibly strange people (for lack of a better description) in his audience to raise questions. And then Bernie hurried out without giving us a chance to meet him, shake his hand, or even have the opportunity to have our pictures taken with him. Sanders has real socialistic ideas and he doesn't hide them. On abortion he is pro-choice, he's for decriminalizing marijuana, he has received an F rating from the NRA, and he's for raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour.
Now I will close with one last quote from Mr. Sanders: “I do believe that in a democratic, civilized society, all people are entitled to health care as a right, all people are entitled to quality education as a right, all people are entitled to decent jobs and a decent income, and we need a government which represents ordinary Americans and not just the wealthy and the powerful. Very sadly, the corporate media ignores some of the huge accomplishments that have taken place in Scandinavia, with a long history of democratic socialism.” After Sanders said this, the news reporter interviewing him replied, “I can hear the Republican attack ad right now: "He wants America to look more like Scandinavia." Sanders gave his honest answer, “That's right...”
So we found out what it is like to attend our first democrat's campaign speech!

A Meet and Greet with Jeb Bush!

The author (right), and her sister, with Governor Jeb Bush

On the beautiful morning of September 22, 2015, we attended a meet and greet with presidential candidate Jeb Bush!  It was at a restaurant called Gravy's Diner in Cedar Falls, IA, and the little place was packed. We slipped into a booth across from reporters for the Courier and Iowa Public Radio. I ordered a delicious pecan waffle for breakfast, and waited for the former governor of Florida to arrive. At just a little past 8:00 he showed up, with all his supporters giving him a big welcome. He began his speech, and questions from the crowded audience followed. He talked about immigration, America's enemies and what to do with them, America's friends, and about how to keep this country safe. He is in favor of the Patriot Act.  He also told about his record as governor. During his 8 years in office he became famous for all the vetoing he did—2,500 budget line items. He led Florida to become the first in the nation in small business creation, and earned the state an A+ rating from the NRA. He's against abortion. He did a lot to help education in his state, but he believes the federal government should stay out of it. He's against minimum wage at a federal level.  After the question and answer time was over, Bethany and I squeezed through the throng of people, who were trying to squeeze by us! We managed to get his autograph, and a picture with him. Even though I probably won't support him in the election, I think it would be neat to have a 3rd Bush in office, and any of the republicans would be better than a democrat.

September 20th found my family and I in Marshalltown, Iowa, this time to attend a meet and greet with Mike Huckabee! Held in the great, spacious outdoors, we brought our lawn chairs and enjoyed the sunshine until we were roasting hot. We then moved to the shade. We had the opportunity to talk with Governor Huckabee, and have our picture taken with him! Meanwhile the rock and roll band “641” blasted away with modern gospel music. Then right on time (he was even early!) Mr. Huckabee joined them on the bass guitar for one song, before taking the microphone to give a brief speech. He told how some people say he's just running for office to make his name bigger, so he could host a TV show, be a big time author, or something. But he has already done all that. He says he's running because this country is in big trouble, and we need someone who knows what he is doing to become the next president. He addressed a few issues like foreign policy, national security and how importantly this country needs to have a standard of morality for God to bless it. He then was open to questions from the audience. When asked about how he would help with the education problem, he replied that he would help by getting the government out of it—the states, local community, and first of all, the parents should be in charge. He gave several good answers, and I would consider voting for him in the caucuses, except I won't be old enough to vote. Mr. Huckabee then left to return to his home back in Florida. The whole crowd left also, leaving the poor rock and roll band with hardly any audience. It was an interesting "meet and greet", and I was happy for the opportunity to attend.

                                                                                #2

After attending our 1st meet and greet with Mike Huckabee, we heard a couple weeks later that he would be in our area again!  It wouldn't be much of a drive, and since the event was at our local Pizza Ranch, afterward we would have the opportunity to feast on pizza! Besides, I really liked what Mr. Huckabee has to say, and we also thought it would be neat to ask him to autograph our family photo with him. So, those of us who were able to skip work for a couple hours, jumped into our van, and were on our way.  We arrived plenty early, so we greeted those around us whom we recognized, and ordered a delicious looking buffet style meal.

At 11:45 the former governor stepped into the room, greeted everyone, and began his speech. He told why he would be able to defeat Clinton if he were to be the Republican nominee. As the lieutenant governor of Arkansas from '93-'96, Huckabee came into office receiving a very cold reception. The democrats disliked him so much that they had his office door literally nailed shut, and all the furniture removed from his room for his first 53 days in office. The democrats avoided him, and were unfriendly, plus they had spent the budget down to almost nothing before the election. Huckabee said that he had defeated the Clinton machine as governor, and he would do it again if elected as the nominee.
Huckabee is for a flat tax (which totally eliminates the IRS), he is against Obamacare, he's for protecting Social Security, and he says his first act as president will be to end the national disgrace of failing to properly care for veterans who sacrificed so greatly for our country.

The governor ended with asking everyone to make sure they would come vote for him on that cold night in February, because he would be the one who would be able to help get the country back on the right track.

Governor of Louisiana and 2016 presidential candidate, Bobby Jindal, with the author.
Back in August we received an invitation to attend a town hall meeting in Marshalltown with Governor Bobby Jindal. We arrived just barely in time to find standing room. The room was packed when the governor of Louisiana came up to the front. I was left standing with the camera men, and some guy standing with his arms crossed who never clapped. Jindal gave a very interesting address, and we all were impressed. He sounded like he had some good plans and ideas. As governor, Jindal balanced the budget, and reduced the debt. He talked about the importance of legal immigration, and told about his father's experience coming to this country. He has a plan for changing Obama Care, and he has a good record as governor. Mr. Jindal is for a small government.
He was born in June, 1971, making him just 13 days younger than Marco Rubio, and gaining him the prize as the youngest candidate in the race!  Jindal seemed sincere, and he seemed to be a real Christian. Afterward everyone in the audience was given as much time as they wanted to talk with Mr. Jindal and take pictures. Instead of being dressed in a suit and tie, he wore a regular shirt, jeans, and cowboy boots, and I think he would make a good president.
Feel free to check out his website: http://www.bobbyjindal.com !
